How to Install a Travel eSIM Before You Fly (Step by Step)
How to install a travel eSIM: buy on Wi-Fi, scan the QR code or use the app, label the line, keep it off until you land. The order that wastes no validity days.
How to install a travel eSIM comes down to one rule: install at home on Wi-Fi, keep its data off, and switch it on when you land. Done in that order you lose none of the plan's validity, and you have a working line the moment the plane door opens.
Before buying
Confirm the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked, using does my phone support eSIM. A locked phone installs the profile and then refuses to connect. Pick the plan from the data you need rather than the headline: the country pages give a low-to-high estimate for 3 to 14 days and the eSIM pages list each provider's plans by price per GB. Check the plan's validity rule on the provider page; most start at first connection in the destination.
Buying and installing at home
- Buy on the provider's site or app; the providers compared here deliver instantly.
- Install on iPhone through Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, then scan the QR code or use the app's Install button. iOS 17.4 and later also accept a pasted activation code.
- Install on Pixel or other Android through Settings, Network & internet, SIMs, Add eSIM, then scan the QR code.
- Label the line with the country name when prompted, because you will be flipping between lines in settings.
- Do not set it as the data line yet if the plan starts at first connection and the trip is days away; leave it installed but switched off.
On landing
- Turn the travel line on.
- Set it as Cellular Data or Mobile data.
- Turn data roaming on for the travel line if the provider says so; most travel eSIMs roam on a partner network and need it.
- Turn data roaming off on the home line, and leave the home line itself on for texts.
- On iPhone, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so data never falls back to the home line.
- Open a web page; if nothing loads in a minute, toggle airplane mode once, then check the provider's APN instructions.
Things that go wrong
"Could not activate" at install usually means the phone is carrier-locked or the QR code was already used. No data after landing but a network name showing means data roaming is off on the travel line, or the home line is still selected for data. A plan that expired early started at install because the line was set as data at home and connected to a partner network; keep the line off until you land. Validity counts calendar days, not days with usage, so a 7-day plan that first connects on day one expires on the morning of day eight.
After the trip
Delete the profile (iPhone: Settings, Cellular, the line, Delete eSIM) or keep it for a top-up next time where the provider allows re-use of the same profile for the same country.
How to install a travel eSIM is a ten-minute job at home and a two-minute job at the gate, in that order. The dual-SIM settings that keep your home number working are in eSIM vs physical SIM.
Frequently asked questions
When does a travel eSIM's validity start?
Usually when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination, not when you install it. Check the plan page, because a few start at install or on a date you choose.
Can I install an eSIM without Wi-Fi?
You need an internet connection to download the profile. At home your carrier's data works; abroad, hotel or airport Wi-Fi does. Installing at home avoids the problem.
Can I move a travel eSIM to another phone?
Generally no. Most travel eSIMs install once on one device, so buy it for the phone you will carry.
