Methodology and sources
Every number on this site is either a published figure from the source named beside it, or arithmetic applied to such figures with the assumptions written here.
1. Data estimates
The estimate is: for each activity, hours per day × megabytes per hour, summed, plus a daily background allowance, then multiplied by trip days. 1 GB is counted as 1,000 MB, as carriers and eSIM providers count it. The low figure uses the lower published rate for each activity and the high figure the upper one.
Hours per day by answer
| Activity | "None" | "Some" | "Lots" |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navigation | 0 h | 0.5 h | 1.5 h |
| Video streaming | 0 h | 0.5 h | 2 h |
| Social media | 0 h | 1 h | 2.5 h |
| Video calls | 0 h | 0.25 h | 1 h |
| Music streaming | 0 h | 1 h | 3 h |
| Browsing and email | 0 h | 0.5 h | 1.5 h |
The "typical" profile used on country pages is navigation some, social media some, browsing some, and none of the rest. "Light" is navigation and browsing only. "Heavy" sets navigation, social media and browsing to lots and the other three to some. These are assumptions, chosen to bracket common travel habits; the calculator lets you set your own.
Rates used by the calculator
| Activity | Low | High | Source (read 2026-10-19) | How it was derived |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Navigation with Google Maps | 5 MB | 10 MB | Consumer Cellular (US carrier, MVNO) blog | Google does not publish a per-hour figure. Google Maps Help (https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6291838?hl=en) confirms offline maps avoid mobile data for guidance: 'your offline maps can guide you to your destination as long as the entire route is within the offline map'; but 'When you're offline, transit, bicycling, or walking directions are unavailable' and 'you can't get traffic info or alternate routes'. So offline avoidance applies to driving only. Not a Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile figure; none of those pages fetched today gave one. |
| Video streaming on a phone (mobile quality to HD) | 250 MB | 2500 MB | Netflix Help Center - How to control how much data Netflix uses | Low = Netflix mobile app Automatic setting (about 250 MB/hr). High = HD streaming per AT&T (2,500 MB/hr). Phones on mobile data usually sit in this range; 4K is excluded. |
| Social media (photos, text and short video) | 120 MB | 700 MB | Consumer Cellular (US carrier, MVNO) blog | Low = scrolling without video (120 MB/hr). High = feeds with video such as Reels or TikTok (up to 700 MB/hr). Source: Consumer Cellular, a US carrier. |
| Video calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, Meet) | 540 MB | 3240 MB | Zoom Support - Zoom system requirements: Windows, macOS, Linux | Low = Zoom 1:1 at 600 kbps each way (540 MB/hr). High = Google Meet at 3.6 Mbps each way (3,240 MB/hr). These are published bandwidth ceilings; WhatsApp and FaceTime publish no figure, so their calls are assumed to fall in this range. |
| Music streaming | 43.2 MB | 144 MB | Spotify Support - Audio quality | Low = Spotify Normal quality, 96 kbps (43 MB/hr). High = Very high, 320 kbps (144 MB/hr). Converted as kbps × 3600 / 8 / 1000. |
| Web browsing | 15 MB | 60 MB | AT&T Internet Data Calculator - How we estimate | Low = AT&T 15 MB/hour (250 KB/min x 60). High = Consumer Cellular 'Browsing websites or email ... 60 MB per hour'. No verified per-page figure: Verizon only says 'It might take 400 KB to gain Internet access' (https://espanol2.verizon.com/articles/making-sense-of-data-how-much-do-you-need), which is ambiguous as a per-page number. |
| Messaging, email and background apps (per day) | 30 MB | 100 MB | AT&T Internet Data Calculator - How we estimate | Assumption stated on the methodology page: roughly 100 to 300 emails or messages a day at 0.02 to 0.3 MB each (AT&T figure), plus app refreshes. Daily budget of 30 to 100 MB. |
Units are per hour except the background line, which is per day.

Known limits
- Zoom and Google Meet figures are recommended or maximum bandwidth, and Netflix figures are "up to" values. Real use is often lower, which is why the low end of each range exists.
- YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and FaceTime publish no per-hour figures. Generic carrier figures stand in for them, and the page says so where it matters.
- The navigation and social-media figures come from Consumer Cellular, a US carrier that publishes them; Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile do not publish a per-hour figure for those activities.
2. Plugs and voltage
The IEC retired its World Plugs guide (confirmed 2026-10-19 at iec.ch/world-plugs). Plug types, voltage and frequency come from WorldStandards.eu country pages and were cross-checked on 2026-10-19 against the 'Mains electricity by country' table; all 25 agreed on plug types and voltage. Where references list a secondary socket type (for example type C alongside A and B in the Dominican Republic), the page lists the primary types. The "US plug fits" rule is: the country's list includes type A or type B. The "voltage differs" rule is: the supply is outside 100–127 V. South Korea is shown at 220 V, its official standard, where one reference lists 230 V.
3. eSIM prices and ranking
Prices were read from each provider's own country page on 2026-10-19: Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Nomad. Up to four plans per provider per country were recorded. Where a provider shows one price for several durations (Saily's unlimited plans) the plan was not recorded, because the price could not be matched to a duration. Some Nomad prices were sale prices on the day. Holafly's 1-day plans are priced only in euros and were left out.
Fixed-data plans are ranked by price ÷ GB. Unlimited plans are ranked by price ÷ days. A plan "covers" a trip if it is unlimited or its GB is at least the rounded high estimate, and its validity is at least the trip length. Affiliate commission is not an input to any ranking; see the disclosure.
4. Country set
Country set: the most-visited overseas destinations for US residents per the NTTO-derived ranking (TripleTrad, 2026-10-14, built on NTTO SIAT 2025), with three small Caribbean/Central American entries swapped for Australia, Iceland and Israel so every country has eSIM price coverage. The order is a guide, not an official rank. Source: Where Americans Travel Abroad 2026: Top 30 Countries (TripleTrad, 2026-10-14), derived from NTTO SIAT 2025 Annual + APIS/I-92.
