How Much Data Does Streaming Use? Video, Music, Calls
How much data streaming uses: 250 MB/h on Netflix's phone setting, 2,500 MB/h HD, 43–144 MB/h music, 540 MB/h+ for video calls. Published figures.
How much data does streaming use? Video is the only activity that can empty a travel plan in an afternoon, and the same hour of video can cost 167 MB or 3 GB depending on one setting. Every figure on this page comes from the service's own documentation, converted where needed as kbps × 3600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1000.
Video
| Setting | Per hour | 1 GB lasts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix app, Save Data | 167 MB | ~6 h | Netflix Help Center |
| Netflix app, Automatic | 250 MB | ~4 h | Netflix Help Center |
| Netflix Low | 300 MB | ~3.3 h | Netflix Help Center |
| Netflix Medium / SD video (YouTube etc.) | 700 MB | ~85 min | Netflix Help Center / AT&T |
| Netflix High, SD | 1,000 MB | ~1 h | Netflix Help Center |
| HD video (YouTube etc.) | 2,500 MB | ~24 min | AT&T data calculator |
| Netflix High, HD | 3,000 MB | ~20 min | Netflix Help Center |
| 4K | 5,850–7,000 MB | ~9–10 min | AT&T / Netflix |
The phone app defaults matter more than the headline rates. Netflix's mobile Automatic setting is one tenth of HD, and YouTube and others have a similar data-saver mode. Set the cellular quality by hand in each app before the trip, because "auto" on a strong 5G signal can mean HD.
Short-video feeds (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) do not publish rates. This site brackets social media with video at 300 to 700 MB per hour using the Consumer Cellular carrier figure.
Music and podcasts
| Spotify setting | Bitrate | Per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Low | ~24 kbit/s | ~11 MB |
| Normal | ~96 kbit/s | ~43 MB |
| High | ~160 kbit/s | ~72 MB |
| Very high (Premium) | ~320 kbit/s | ~144 MB |

Video calls
Zoom's system requirements give 600 kbps each way for high-quality 1:1 video and 1.2 Mbps each way for 720p, which is 540 MB and 1,080 MB per hour respectively, counting both directions as a mobile plan does. Google Meet's published ceiling of 3.6 Mbps each way reaches about 3,240 MB per hour. FaceTime and WhatsApp publish no per-hour figure; they adapt to the signal and are assumed to sit inside that range.
Why the gap matters
A traveller who watches one hour of video a day for a week uses 1.75 GB on Netflix's Automatic setting and 17.5 GB in HD. Same habit, ten times the data, decided by one toggle. That is why the calculator shows a low-to-high range rather than one number, and why the country pages say to buy for the high figure unless you set quality by hand.
Cutting the streaming bill
- Download shows and playlists on Wi-Fi the night before; most services allow it.
- Set each app's cellular quality to standard or data saver.
- Drop video calls to audio when the signal is poor; the app will do it anyway, badly.
- If video is non-negotiable, compare unlimited plans on the eSIM pages, remembering that unlimited plans slow down after a daily full-speed allowance.
How much data streaming uses is almost entirely a settings question, and ten minutes of settings before you fly is worth more than any plan upgrade.
